Relic of a bygone era, but still kicking!
An organization that is over 200 years old, is sure to carry a bit of obsolete practices and vestiges of deadwood even if it survives through the cyber era, with modernization and inevitable computerisation. But such an organization in the banking sector enjoying the prestigious position of being the premier bank in the state sector cannot afford such a slumber. but it sure has come a long way from the time – not log ago – when the depositors’ details were entered in a register which measures 4 feet by 3 feet and required 2 men to shuffle through the pages!
But the figures and indices sing hosannas for the performance of the bank, may be due to its leverage with the Government. It has over 11,000 branches, annual income of over Rs. 57,000 crores and over 10,000 ATMs.
Yes it is the India’s first and biggest bank, The State Bank of India. Have a look at its Chief General Manager’s office situated on the historic First Line Beach, Chennai, India.
