Catch 22

November 23, 2004 · Filed Under India-centric · 3 Comments

The following observation is attributed to Mr. Arun Shourie, former Indian minister for, inter alia, communication and IT:-

To shore up the finances of India, an economist suggested the following measures for which the response from the administration is juxtaposed:

  • Tax agricultural income :: No, we can’t do it because of political reasons
  • Ok, then, you realise all tax arrears :: Oh, we can’t do it for administrative reasons
  • In that case make the administration work by making everyone come to office on time :: That we can’t do for cultural reasons
  • Agreed. At least make them work when they are in ofice :: No, that can’t be done for historical reasons.

Obvious reasons for Governments not working!

Eat the Sun; you don’t need food!

Mr. Hira Ratan Manek, 67 year old Indian living in U.S has evolved a phenomenon of “sun gazing”, through which you gather all the energy you need for survival directly from the sun. You don’t need any solid food. Yes, he hasn’t eaten any food since 1995!

If you think I am kidding, visit his Solar Healing Centre and begin practicing union with the Sun God!

His method is christened on himself (HRM) and basically includes gazing at the sun during zero-UV “safe hours”, to wit, “anytime within 1-hour window after sunrise or anytime within the 1-hr window before sunset”.

You can get the details of his magic potion from his site or by purchasing his merchandise!

Yelping help!

November 5, 2004 · Filed Under General · Comment

Yelp! is a novel service that helps you get recommendations from your friends and the community even on such mundane things like where to get a good bite!

Instead of just asking a friend yourself for his recommendation one-to-one, you try to use Yelp! and you get the benefit of the experience of all its members. Sort of network of recommendations that cascade.

But it is U.S-centric.

In Chennai, India, there a free information service run by a private organisation whcih gives you the address and telephone number of any shop or a service provider within Chennai city - be it a physician, eatery or transport. Anything. All you do is dial 1947. Easiest number to remember to any Indian! (For non-Indians: that is the year India got independence from the imperial Britain!)

Thunderbird blues

October 16, 2004 · Filed Under Techno-Bab · 1 Comment

Now that I have started cohabiting with Firefox, I thought the natural corollary is to try out Thunderbird. But I find that setting up SMTP server is a real pain in Thunderbird. In OE, you can finish the account settings (as well as selection of authorisation) in a tabbed dialog box with POP and SMTP server params on a single pane . But TB asks for only POP server address and assumes SMTP server as that of the default mail account. And you have to go to “Advanced” set up to assign the SMTP server. Besides, the password management is skewed and painful. The program assumes so many things that you get to know of them only after it screws up things.

Hope these issues have been highlighted already and the developers are siezed of them.
